US temporarily allows distribution of varenicline with impurities

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced it will temporarily allow the distribution of varenicline containing elevated levels of impurities until levels can be eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level. Pfizer ceased distribution following the discovery of high levels of nitrosamines that can cause cancer. A representative said that the benefits of stopping smoking outweighed the risks from the impurities.
