US state of New Jersey reduces sentences for magic mushrooms

New Jersey’s Assembly Judiciary Committee has voted to reduce the penalty for possessing magic mushrooms. The legal status of psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) will not change but possession of magic mushrooms will become a ‘disorderly persons offence’ rather than a ‘third-degree crime’. The maximum sentence will therefore reduce from 3 to 5 years in prison to a $1,000 fine and up to 6 months in prison.
