US state of Illinois legalises recreational cannabis
In January 2020, Illinois legalised recreational cannabis for people aged 21 and over. As part of the new law’s implementation, over 11,000 low-level cannabis convictions were expunged from people’s criminal records. The Governor of Illinois said that this was the first of many waves in which cannabis-related crimes will be officially pardoned. He estimated that around 116,000 convictions for possession of under 30g of cannabis will be expunged under the new law.
