US life expectancy rises as overdoses fall

The US federal government has announced that, in 2018, life expectancy increased for the first time in 4 years. US life expectancy had declined between 2015 and 2017, a trend largely attributed to high levels of drug-related overdoses from prescription opioids. Life expectancy in the US was highest in 2014 at an average of 78.9 years. It was 78.6 years in 2017 and 78.7 years in 2018.
