US alcohol sales up by 55% following COVID-19 lock-down

Sales of alcohol in the US were up by 55% in the week ending 21 March 2020 compared with the same week in 2019. Sales of spirits were up by 75%, wine by 66% and beer by 42%. Data from sales analysts Nielsen also suggested that online alcohol sales were up by 243%. The increase may reflect people stockpiling alcohol ahead of the COVID-19 ‘lock-down’ measures and does not necessarily reflect increased alcohol consumption.
