Tobacco sales fall following the implementation of plain packaging rules in the UK

The UK introduced plain packaging and increased taxes on tobacco products in May 2017. Since this time sales have fallen by around 20 million cigarettes per month. Tobacco industry representatives voiced concern at the time that the regulations would increase sales of illicit tobacco products; however, no such increase has been observed by HM Revenue and Customs.
