Smoking rates down more than 50% in Greece

According to new figures released by The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), smoking prevalence in Greece among people under 24 years fell by 52.4% between 2009 and 2019. In September 2019, 24.9% of adults said they smoked more than one cigarette per day (down by 24.5% from 2009), and 3.7% said they smoked fewer than seven cigarettes per week (down by 38.3% from 2009). The ELSTAT report broadly aligns with other European reports on smoking prevalence in Greece but differs from a recent World Health Organisation estimate that 42% of people in Greece smoked.
