Rise in the number of overdose deaths in the US

According to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of overdose deaths in the United States has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 12 months to May 2020, over 81,000 overdose deaths were reported in the US, the highest number ever recorded in a 12-month period. Compared with the 12 months to June 2019, deaths as a result of synthetic opioid use (such as fentanyl) increased by 38%, deaths from psychostimulants increased by 35% and deaths from cocaine increased by 27%.
