Rio de Janeiro becomes the first Brazilian state to legislate for medical cannabis

The Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro has passed a new law to allow medical cannabis cultivation and research. The legislation means that patients can grow and use medical cannabis. Patient associations will also be permitted to cultivate cannabis for medical purposes where federally authorised to do so. Medical cannabis use was previously authorised on a case by case basis, resulting in just 78 individual authorisations across Brazil.
