Registered ‘drug addicts’ in Tajikistan reduce by over a third

The number of people registered as a ‘drug addict’ in Tajikistan has reduced by 36% over the past 11 years. There were 8,846 people on the official state addiction register in 2008, reducing to 5,666 by 2019. The reduction has been credited to state interventions on addiction, although a government spokesperson conceded that drug use in Tajikistan is influenced by changes in drug production and trafficking in neighbouring Afghanistan.
