Oregon becomes first US state to decriminalise drug possession

Oregon has become the first US state to decriminalise possession of any drug. A state-wide referendum was conducted alongside the presidential elections in November 2020. Oregon voters also voted in favour of legalising access to a range of psychedelic drugs for therapeutic use. The new regulations mean people caught in possession of small quantities of illicit substances will face a fine and free access to recovery services, as opposed to a criminal conviction and possible sentencing.
