Nicaraguan police seized $10.5m from illicit drug traders in the first 6 months of 2020. This continues a year-on-year increase in the value of cash seizures. In 2017, police seized $6m; this rose to $12m in 2019. Most seizures occurred in the border regions of Nicaragua along the Pacific coast. Despite this increase, seizures of cocaine in the region have reduced over the past 10 years, with 36 tons of cocaine seized between 2007 and 2009 compared with just 16 tons seized between 2017 and 2019.
