Increased illicit alcohol seizures in Ireland’s prisons during COVID-19

Ireland’s prison staff seized 541 litres of illicit alcohol between January and July 2020 compared with 395 litres for the whole of 2019. The increase has been attributed to boredom among prisoners who have spent more time in their cells than usual due to restrictions on movement. It has also been more difficult for prisoners to source illicit drugs as visits have been stopped to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
