Increased illicit alcohol production in Sri Lanka following COVID-19 ban

Since Sri Lanka introduced a ban on alcohol to prevent spread of COVID-19, increased numbers of illicit distilleries are reportedly operating in the country. The small distilleries are often set up in people’s kitchens and, although police are attempting to prevent such production, they are short-staffed and are unable to organise surprise inspections of residential premises whilst COVID-19 social distancing restrictions are in place.
