Illegal cigarette trade reaches record high in India

India’s Central Board of Indirect taxes and Customs (CBIC) has reported that, in the 12 months to April 2021, Indian officials seized a greater value of illegal cigarettes than at any time in the past 5 years. The CBIC noted that Rs17.7 billion (approx. £176 million) worth of cigarettes were seized since April 2020, around ten times higher than the value seized in the previous 12 months. The seizures comprised cigarettes smuggled across borders as well as those traded to avoid domestic taxes.
