Health Canada relaxes opioid prescribing rules

Prescribing requirements have been relaxed in Canada so that people on opioid prescriptions can continue to receive medication whilst practising social distancing in response to COVID-19. The measures are designed to support people taking opioid medications for chronic pain conditions as well as for people in addiction treatment. Pharmacists are now able to extend prescriptions, transfer prescriptions to other pharmacists and facilitate home delivery of prescriptions where people might be self-isolating. Doctors and GPs are also now permitted to extend opioid prescriptions by telephone.
