Drug deaths in Portugal increase 30% in five years

Portugal’s General-Directorate for Intervention on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (Serviço de Intervenção nos Comportamentos Aditivos e nas Dependências – SICAD) has reported that drug deaths in Portugal increased by 30% between 2013 and 2018. In 2018 over 90% of the 307 deaths that involved illicit substances involved one or more drugs in association with alcohol or benzodiazepines. Of those 307 deaths, 47 were identified as overdoses. Opiates were involved in 65% of recorded deaths, cocaine in 51% and methadone in 31%.
