Drug deaths at record high in England and Wales

Official figures for England and Wales show that drug deaths rose to an all-time high in 2018. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported 2,917 deaths from illicit drugs in 2018 indicating a rise of 17% from 2017, the biggest single-year rise since 1993. Fatalities were concentrated in the North East of England and among men aged between 40 and 49. The figures bring the rate of drug overdose in England to twice the European average.
