Columbia’s cocaine production increases despite reduced area devoted to coca crops

The Illicit Cultivations Monitoring System (SIMCI) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has reported that the area of Columbia used to cultivate coca reduced from 169,000 hectares in 2018 to 154,000 hectares in 2019. The SIMCI also reported that, during the same period, cocaine production increased by 1.5% to 1,136 tons. The increased production is attributed to drug processing operations moving to areas of Columbia where natural conditions aid more effective cultivation and processing.
