Canadian province of British Columbia to prescribe pharmaceutical alternatives to illicit drugs

British Columbia has announced a new programme whereby pharmaceutical alternatives to illicit drugs will be prescribed by nurses to people who use drugs who are at risk of overdose. The alternatives are set to include smokable and injectable options. The initiative follows a rise in opioid overdoses in British Columbia resulting in over 900 deaths between January and September 2020.
