Annual report on the death penalty for drug offences

Known executions for drug offences increased from 93 in 2018 to 122 in 2019 according to a report by Harm Reduction International (a non-governmental organisation). Drug offences comprised 18% of all known executions in 2019 with Vietnam carrying out the largest number of executions for drug offences (74) followed by Indonesia (54) and Singapore (13). There were fewer uses of the death penalty than in 2015 when 755 executions were confirmed, a reduction largely attributed to reforms in Iran. Thirty-five countries maintain the death penalty for drug offences.
