Alcohol-related deaths in England increase by 20% during COVID-19 pandemic

Public Health England (PHE) has reported that there was a 20% rise in the number of alcohol-related deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing from 5,819 in 2019 to 6,983 in 2020. Cases of liver disease increased by 21%, accounting for 80% of deaths. Deaths due to alcohol poisoning increased by 15%.
