Study highlights new and cheaper way to treat heroin addiction
Costly methadone treatment for heroin addicts could be replaced by an alternative substitute opiate that is half the price, safer and less toxic
Young adults who have undergone a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, are more likely to increase their tobacco consumption, according to a new study published in the journal Addiction.

Crystal meth: what’s the real story?
New research into the extent of crystal methamphetamine use in London is published later today in an international peer-reviewed journal – showing that about 10% of London’s gay men have used it. Most men used it infrequently – once or twice a year. The study also identifies a link between crystal meth and unsafe sex but the researchers were unable to establish cause-and-effect.

U OF M STUDY FINDS HEALTH EDUCATION HELPS AFRICAN AMERICAN LIGHT SMOKERS KICK THE HABIT
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (May 30, 2006) The first clinical trial to focus on light smokers shows that African Americans are motivated to quit more by completing health education than by using nicotine gum. Jasjit S. Ahluwalia, M.D., M.P.H., professor and researcher with the University of Minnesota Medical School and Cancer Center, and executive director of the University’s Office of Clinical Research, led the research team on this study. The findings are published in the June issue of the journal Addiction.

Addiction: the origins and evolution of a highly successful scientific journal
An article published in the May 2006 issue of Addiction describes the astonishing journey from this journal’s origin in 1884 under the somewhat ponderous title of the Proceedings of the Society for the Study and Cure of Inebriety, to its present day identity as Addiction. Over these years the journal has moved from a small-circulation British production to the leading international journal in this specialist field with over half a million online hits last year.

A new study by researchers in California has confirmed what many people have suspected, that the incidence of violent assaults is higher around places where alcohol is sold.

Justice Center study explores rural alcohol ban
ANCHORAGE – A new study released this week and conducted by Darryl Wood, associate professor in the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Justice Center, and Paul Gruenewald of the Prevention Research Center of Berkeley, CA, looks at rural communities that have banned alcohol and how the ban has impacted the communities in terms of serious injuries.

Cannabis use "normative" among young people in 31 countries
A large-scale survey of teenagers’ drug use across North America and Europe shows that cannabis use is now normative in wealthy countries and that in economically developing countries girls are rapidly catching up with boys in their patterns of use. The work is published in this month’s issue of the international journal Addiction.
